This Georgian mahogany tea caddy is truly beautiful. The exceptional colour, stringing to the edges, key and remnants of the lining remaining are gorgeous in and of themselves, but the particularly unusual feature is the brass name plate - A M Johnes Knight. Having researched her name, I believe this tea caddy was given as a wedding present to A M (Anna Maria) in 1808.
Anna Maria Cuyler, the daughter of General Sir Cornelius Cuyler, 1st Baronet, and Anne Grant, married Samuel Johnes Knight in 1808. Samuel, a wealthy landowner and philanthropist, was known for his long life which spanned from 1756 to 1852. The couple resided at Henllys, a grand estate in Carmarthenshire, Wales, which was renowned for its elegant Georgian architecture and stunning views. Their marriage connected two influential families, combining Samuel’s legacy as a prominent figure in Welsh society with Anna Maria’s distinguished lineage. Together, they contributed to the social and cultural fabric of their community during the early 19th century.
The tea caddy measures 8cm w x 8cm h.
