The sampler shows various stitching for buttonholes. The history is on the back of the sampler and says that Mary Broadbelt was born in 1839 in Macclesfield. The 1851 census shows her at Flimby Lodge School aged 12 years.
Flimby Lodge was a poor school for orphans where girls would have been taught sewing and housekeeping skills with which to gain future work. Flimby Lodge was located near Workington in Cumbria. Mary died in 1895 aged 54.
