A lovely 19th century Mahogany spelling alphabet box with a sliding lid. The lid has an inset bone tile with ABC on it. Inside there is a divided interior for doubled sided bone tiles. Each tile has a capital letter on one side and a lower case on the reverse. These spelling tiles were used for teaching children. There are at least 3 of each letter, most have four, the vowels have more again.
The box measures 23.5cm w x 14cm d x 3cm h.
