A 19th century double-ended Welsh knitting sheath. It is a nicely turned piece from sycamore.

It measures 16.5cm l x 2cm w.

This comes from:'The St John Perrott Stimson Collection of Treen & British Folk Art’.

St John Perrott Stimson, who died earlier this year, was a former architect with a passion for design. This passion was the spark that drove he and his wife Judith to amass a collection of almost 4,000 domestic items dating back 300 years. Some of which were displayed at their very own museum in Westgate Hill, opposite Pembroke Castle.

Originally from Leicester, St John and Judith moved to the historic town of Pembroke in 1983. In 1986, they opened the private 'Museum of the Home' which was open to the public each summer season.

Over the years more than 70,000 visitors viewed their cucumber straighteners, Edwardian carpet sweepers, and all manner of quirky household objects from the 17th Century to the 20th.

    ANTIQUE TREEN

The word Treen is derived from the word tree and is a term used to describe wooden household objects, all turned from one piece of wood e.g. a bowl, plate, gingerbread mould, and spoons, always having a function.

Nowadays when we talk about Antique Treen it tends to cover all small wooden items including antique snuff boxes, candle stands, spice towers, etc. often made from several pieces of turned wood.

When a piece of wood has been painstakingly turned or carved, handled, polished and loved over a few hundred years old, it can develop a wonderful colour and patina and becomes an irresistible piece of Antique Treen.
