Here is a great traveller/explorers roll up chess board made from wood, from the late 1800s. It comes with a boxed set of bone red and white chess pieces from the same period.
The roll up chess board took up much less room than a chess board and hence was a great piece to take away whilst travelling. The board has replacement baize to the base.
