A lovely 19th century mahogany box inlaid in bone with "Spelling Alphabet". Inside there are seventy one bone counters some double sided some single sided. The double sided have both upper and lower case letters on either side. There are at least two of each letters and more of the vowels.
The box measures 9cm w x 6cm d x 4cm h
Described in a biography about Jane Austen that it was believed her mother taught her to read and write using a set of bone counters.
