A fine quality antique treen "Go to Bed" of large size measuring approx 12cm h x 5cm w, with the unusual addition of a candle socket as well. It is turned from laburnum wood with lovely figuring. Note the castellated top, (one has a very small old repair, difficult to spot). Very good quality and a great example.
"Go to Beds"  were for storing and protecting matches. A match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. They were also used for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters and hence would be found on desks.
