A 19th century lignum vitae Go to Bed. The lid has a boss in the centre to place the match, it unscrews for storage of the matches.

On the underside of the base, which is concave, there is some striker paper to light the match.

It measures 5 cm H x 2.3 cm W.

A match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. The were also used for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters. Note this one still has its striking paper to the base of the box.
