An unusual painted Tunbridge Ware nutmeg grater in the shape of a double-lidded bowl or saucepan with a side handle.
Constructed from whitewood, either holly or sycamore. The top is decorated with a transfer print, with some writing and possibly a date.It shows Brighton pavillion in the distance and people out for a walk. The print is taken at am unusual angle Both the top lid and handle screw off, to reveal the grater, and so does the base, which has been replaced at some stage, The base void would have been for storage of nutmegs.
These were probably for use at the table or bar when flavoring alcoholic beverages.
A similar one is illustrated in Dr Reckless's book page 257 on Nutmeg graters, pomanders and spice boxes.
It measures approx 7cm w excluding the handle.
