A late 18th ,early 19th century pipe tamper. This piece is carved from one piece of wood, the pipe tamper has two open lanterns and two balls.
Pipe tampers were used to 'correct the draw' by pressing down the burning contents in the small round pipe bowl. Much better than getting a burnt finger!
