Super, Small Sewing Box

This is a great Georgian rosewood sewing box with its contents.
There are many attributes to this piece, starting with the outside which is rosewood, edged with boxwood stringing to create contrasting colours and defined edges. On the canted lid there is a further strip of inlaid feathered banding. It has an oval escutcheon with it's working key. The box stands on four compressed bun feet.

Inside it is lined with the original dark pink paper lining. It has several sections which house seven rosewood silk winders. It also has a whitewood lift out pin cushion along with a double ended pin poppet and acorn shaped tape measure, the silk tape has frayed at one end. It also has a silk needlecase book a pair of steel scissors and a small pot.
It is a great small size only measuring 17.5cm w x13.5cm d x 8cm h.

ANTIQUE TREEN

The word Treen is derived from the word tree and is a term used to describe wooden household objects, all turned from one piece of wood e.g. a bowl, plate, gingerbread mould, and spoons, always having a function.

Nowadays when we talk about Antique Treen it tends to cover all small wooden items including antique snuff boxes, candle stands, spice towers, etc. often made from several pieces of turned wood.

When a piece of wood has been painstakingly turned or carved, handled, polished and loved over a few hundred years old, it can develop a wonderful colour and patina and becomes an irresistible piece of Antique Treen.
